Khadijah “Jackie” Al-Amin, the first Muslim woman to ever win elected office in Chester County, was sworn in last week as a Coatesville City councilwoman, writes Lucas Rodgers for Daily Local News.
In addition to Al-Amin, Donald Folks was also sworn in as new councilman by Magisterial District Judge Gregory Hines at the council meeting on May 29.
Both new council members are Democrats who won the special elections on May 15. Al-Amin defeated Republican Councilman, John Guerrera, and Folks defeated Democratic Councilwoman, Delores Williams.
Al-Amin has long been an active Coatesville citizen. However, she decided to run as she felt having a vote on the council would allow her to do better for the citizens of Coatesville.
“I’m very honored that the citizens chose me to represent them,” said Al-Amin.
Chester County Democratic Committee Chairman Brian McGinnis also offer congratulations to Al-Amin.
“This is not only a historic moment for the Chester County Democratic Committee but for Chester County,” McGinnis said. Al-Amin “has dedicated herself to the Coatesville community for 40 years and will serve them well on council.”
