Richard Hayne, the CEO of Urban Outfitters and a Coatesville resident, is considering expanding the company’s e-commerce fulfillment center in Gap much earlier than expected, writes Tim Mekeel for Lancaster Online.
The company is planning to double the existing 1.6 million square feet of its facility, which employs 800 full-time workers and 300 temporary staff to fulfill orders placed online.
While the expansion was already part of a 20-year growth plan, the company’s rapidly growing online sales are forcing it to consider moving forward ahead of schedule.
“It would be a very, very big building and a lot, a lot of jobs,” said David Ziel, Chief Development Officer at Urban Outfitters.
He emphasized, however, that management has yet to greenlight the project as the potential expansion is still being evaluated.
The company is also basing its decision on whether the tax relief it’s looking for from Salisbury Township, Pequea Valley School District, Lancaster County, and the state will be approved.
