The Immaculate Heart of Mary Family Literacy Center opened its newest quarters at 139 Modena Road in Coatesville earlier this month, writes Lou Baldwin for CatholicPhilly.com.
Leadership of the Sisters Servants of the IHM was joined by staff and friends earlier this month to break in the new premises.
The Literacy Center was established 16 years ago in St. Joachim Parish in Philadelphia. It has since added the campus of St. Joseph Parish in Coatesville, and now this location.
The program is a full-time ministry for director Sister Bernadette Heistler, Sister Jean Hennelly, and Priscilla Clouser, who are all helped by volunteers.
The center serves immigrant Hispanic women and their children, and relies completely on funds provided by the IHM Sisters and private benefactors.
“At this time, we have 21 mothers and nine children aged 3 to 5,” said Sister Bernadette.
Their first priority is to teach the beneficiaries the language, but the program also includes life skills.
“When we meet them, they are so isolated and afraid,” said Sister Bernadette. But over time “they become very confident.”
